I couldn't either, really, but somehow managed it. I got a Courier
through something they called the "sysop program" back then, had to
prove you operated a board, and they gave you like half-off the price.
Came with a brass tag on the case that said something, can't recall what though. I still have it somewhere in the back of a closet. :-)

I wish mine still worked! That was the best modem I ever had.

I was also a member of the USR sysop program back when it first began. All three of the HSTs I got were free (but I had to send back the old one in order to get the new one.) I still have the last one and it still works.

There was a guy on one of the shadier BBSes around ("The Pirate's
Hollow") that claimed he could reprogram an eprom on a Sportster to get
it to run DS like the Courier did.

I do remember the sysop programs. I had to settle for whatever my job
    phased out/tossed out - when they went 14.4, I got a 9600 baud modem.
    When they went 28.8, I went 14.4.

Either mine quit working after you could exchange them *or* I had forgotten that I could exchange it. :( Glad you have one that still works! ;)
