It's meat, just not high quality meat. And might in cases be the *kind* of m that was advertised (e.g. hamburgers made of kangaroo).

Often times it probably has soy (or other things) for filler.. and sometimes the percentage of filler is significant.

I've heard a rumor that McDonald's uses sawdust as filler, and another about McDonald's using "pink slime", but I've always thought those are just myths. I think the pink slime one in particular has been debunked as false. Also, Google sez the sawdust rumor comes from the use of cellulose as a filler.

The McDonalds website now (and maybe for awhile now, I never paid attention until this conversation started) specifically states "100% beef". So maybe it was a thing in the past, but I'd still go with DM's comment that it's probably not very high quality/grade beef. I'm also not sure if you could even have "fillers" of pork or turkey when you specifically state "100% beef".

However, if the gubmint can lie to you, I'm sure McDonalds can, too. Money talks, and bullshit walks.

Yeah, I recall reading that McDonald's was aware of the spreading rumor that they were using "pink slime", and they wanted to reiterate that those rumors are false and they're using real beef.

And I agree, "100% beef" sounds like there shouldn't be any filler.

My first job (years ago) was at a Dairy Queen, and their french
fries were also frozen before being shipped to the restaurant.
And I think Dairy Queen's fries are some of the most bland
fries out there.. I'm not sure if they're still using
pre-frozen fries. They've changed their menu significantly
    since I left.

I'm still wanting to try their Blizzard...that's the ONLY good
"Blizzard Warning"...when the Dairy Queen Employee tells you that
your confectionary treat is ready. <G>

As for french fry taste, I think McDonald's fries are the best.

I really like their fries too.

I love the Burger King original flavor chicken nuggets and the sandwich...plus their onion rings. But, their onion rings tend to
give really stinky farts...I thought I had a skunk in the room. <G>

    Nick,

If we're only talking fast food places, then I would tend to
agree. Burger King also has some pretty good fries.

As I told Nightfox, I prefer their chicken nuggets and onion rings.
However, the latter produce rather stinky farts, that I thought a
skunk had entered the room. <G>

But as for asking for "no salt," I couldn't do that. They're so
much better when they're salted right out of the fryer, since
the grease is still on them to act as a binder. ;)

I rarely season my food, but I know that the processed foods are
loaded with sodium...which isn't good if you have a heart condition
(as I do, with congestive heart failure). However, I drink plenty of
no sugar, low calorie fruit punch drink I make from packets I get
from Kroger), and the Lasix keeps my kidneys in high gear.

I saw a meme on Facebook that noted "If you see a light on here
at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, it means I have to go
    pee. <G>

Before my wife died nearly 19 years ago now, when we'd fry up
hamburgers, we'd use salt, pepper, and minced onion on them. Now,
if I want burgers, I order from DoorDash, or get them from Kroger.
Also, whenever we'd order out for pizza, she told them "I want every
anchovy you have in the place!!". I told her "You can have those nasty things!!". To me, those are a massive salt lick!! When her parents
asked me why I didn't stop her, I replied "Every time I said something,
she just gave me the stink eye. So, I felt it better to shut up".

However, I still have plenty of the Kroger 3 minute microwave pizzas,
along with several loaves of bread, and several varieties of tuna salad...including Deli Style, Ranch, Bacon Ranch, Hickory Smoke, Honey
Barbecue (my favorite), Lemon Pepper, and Herb N Garlic. There are
other "hot and spicy varieties" that I don't care for. But, I add some
Kraft Sweet Honey Barbecue Sauce to enhance the flavor on wheat bread,
and it makes for a tasty meal. One packet can prepare 2 sandwiches.

I do like to have Funions or Lays Dill Pickle Potato Chips with them.

Agreed, but I hear that now all McDonald's fries come from

think the pink slime one in particular has been debunked as false. Also, Google sez the sawdust rumor comes from the use of cellulose as a filler.

See if you can figure out how much and what kind of "meat" is in Jack In The Box tacos.

not very high quality/grade beef. I'm also not sure if you could even have "fillers" of pork or turkey when you specifically state "100% beef".

Not sure if Subway claims 100% anything anywhere, but I heard that their meats (salami? roast beef? ham?) is all actually turkey. No idea how true that is.

Also, I bet the FDA allows for some percentage of random crap even when you state "100%" anything. That's just a guess/skepticism though :).

also has some chicken nuggets that I think are pretty good (I do like KFC's seasoning).

Btw I have a PDF that claims to be all their recipes. We've made the "extra tasty crispy" chicken, and it's pretty great. It will always be slightly different from KFC because of the chicken itself and the fry oil, but the seasoning flavor was all there. Gotta do twice-battered, of course.

I was once a big fan of Arby's. I can remember watching them carve the meat behind the counter. Lately I am not sure what they do to it, but it is NOT as good as it once was. I barely visit them more than 2 or three times a year now. I was once a weekly visitor.

Recently I've noticed it seems to be a popular thing to joke about Arby's and their food quality.. I've never really gone to Arby's very often, but I do like them occasionally and still go there sometimes. I like their roast beef sandwiches (and I like their Horsey Sauce & Arby's Sauce), though I feel like without any vegetables on them, they're probably nutritionally even worse than other fast food sandwiches. I know they have other sandwiches though - They have a roast turkey sandwich that I like.

Also, Arby's has a couple of seasonal fish sandwiches that I actually think are some of the best fish sandwiches in the industry - One of them is the King's Hawaiian Deluxe fish sandwich, which has a King's Hawaiian bun, tartar sauce, lettuce, tomato, and cheese, and I think the fish fillet they use is pretty good. I think their curly fries are pretty good too.

It's meat, just not high quality meat. And might in cases be the *kind* of m that was advertised (e.g. hamburgers made of kangaroo).

Often times it probably has soy (or other things) for filler.. and sometimes the percentage of filler is significant.

In the '70s, a rumor started that McDonalds used worm meat for filler.
The CEO at the time shut it down smartly by reminding people that worm
meat cost more than ground beef at the time.

Same! Except I'm not sure I'd specify a small curly fries, so whatever came with the 1/2lb roast beef sandwich meal (maybe medium?). Jamocha shake is definitely my go-to though.

Here in Utah, the giant roast beef was called a Montana, that with fries and a shake was a great combo.

You've never had a Dairy Queen Blizzard?

Nope. I'm not sure if I'm lactose intolerant or not, as after recently
eating ice cream sandwiches, you would've thought I had eaten a pallet
of Bush's Baked Beans instead (that's another item I haven't tried).

The Whopper is my favorite thing from Burger King. I like
their onion rings too, but I agree about the gasious
    side-effect.

I recall several items over the years that they no longer have.

    1) Yumbo - Hot Ham And Cheese Sandwich
    2) Veal Parmigean (sp?). A veal patty, with mozarella cheese, and
    marinara sauce.
    3) Hoagie - a cold ham and cheese sandwich with mayonnaise, lettuce,
    and tomato.
    4) Hot Apple Pie.

They have a fish sandwich, but it used to be called "The Whaler".

I love their chicken nuggets (original flavor) and the original
    chicken sandwich.

The best part of the burgers is that they are flame broiled, and
not swimming in grease, like at Wendy's, McDonald's, and other
places. However, they can aggravate my acid reflux.

Downing a couple of chili-cheese doge and a small blizzard out

A fellow ham radio operator notes that his girlfriend loves to eat

in North Little Rock. Their catfish filets have been delicious!!
Down in southwest Arkansas, in the community of Glenwood, 35 miles
northwest of Arkadelphia, is "The Fish Nest". Friday afternoon through
Sunday is "an all you can eat catfish buffet". Myself and two other
ham radio operators went there after a "hamfest", and we over-exploited
the meaning of H.A.M. (Have Another Meal). We waddled back to the van,
and were thankful that the tires didn't go flat as we got inside!!

    I'm a curly-fry fan, myself. Mickey-D's are good, but a little
thing; I like my fries on the thick side, with ridges.

I like the crinkle fries at Arby's and McDonald's fries.

Small, unspectacular curs of meat, similar to a Sizzler. Baked

Unlimited beer, wine and soda. As a kid, I could get a whole pitcher of

There's another sauce I've seen in some stores similar to A1 called HP Sauce (which I think is fairly good). For a long time, I thought it was just another steak sauce (since one of the stores that sold it here was a usual grocery store). But a few years ago I realized HP sauce is a British thing - and indeed, it actually seems to be relatively uncommon in the US. The store I had seen it sold here local to me was Fred Meyer - But they're owned by Kroger, so I wonder if Kroger might also carry it in other states. I've also seen it at Cost Plus World Market; it may also be available at other similar stores which import products from other countries.

Also, Arby's has a couple of seasonal fish sandwiches that I
actually think are some of the best fish sandwiches in the
industry - One of them is the King's Hawaiian Deluxe fish
sandwich, which has a King's Hawaiian bun, tartar sauce,
lettuce, tomato, and cheese, and I think the fish fillet they
use is pretty good. I think their curly fries are pretty good
    too.

During Lent, places that normally don't sell fish (Arby's, Wendy's,
etc.) have it on their menu, so they can pick up the Catholic
    clientele.

I have had that King's Hawaiian Deluxe Fish sandwich, and it's

As far as I've witnessed, hot dog packages only seem to tell

As far as I've witnessed, hot dog packages only seem to tell
you what kind of meat it contains (ie: turkey, pork, beef,
etc), not what actual parts of said animals are used. But, I
haven't looked any further into that. As long as I don't get
sick from it, I can still enjoy a grilled hot dog once in
awhile, even knowing that all of this is possible. :)

At least most of us aren't like Joey Chestnut, setting a record
for the number of hot dogs eaten in a short period of time. I like
to eat mine slow and easy...with cheese and either ketchup or
    mustard on it.

We have Weinershcnitzel's here, the Chili Cheese dogs and Chili Cheese fries are pretty good.

If a steak is really good, I don't need sauce at all. But, as I said previously, for me A1 goes great with just about anything one would also use ketchup, mustard, horseradish sauce, or mayonnaise (gross) with.

I agree. I like a good steak sometimes, and a good steak doesn't need any sauce. I do like horseradish sometimes, but only with certain cuts/dishes, such as roast beef.

During Lent, places that normally don't sell fish (Arby's, Wendy's, etc.) have it on their menu, so they can pick up the Catholic clientele.

I have had that King's Hawaiian Deluxe Fish sandwich, and it's quite tasty.

Weinerschnitzel doesn't have locations here, but I think it's an odd name for a place selling hot dogs.. A schnitzel is a breaded & fried cutlet of veal, chicken, pork, or beef (and a Wiener schnizel specifically is one from (or based on one from) Vienna, Austria).

I don't recall Burger King having those.. Maybe I hadn't
    noticed, or they're regional items.

They were in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

I think Burger King's chicken is okay. I'd prefer chicken
nuggets from KFC or McDonald's though.

I've bought the frozen ones from Tyson, that I could microwave.

I was having acid reflux fairly regularly (and possibly GERD).
I started taking 20mg of Omeprazole daily, which has been
    helping a lot.

I take 40 mg of that twice a day.

What did you think of working there?

Not bad. I still remember the instructions from "The Manual Of
Operating Data" on the proper way to make a Whopper (R).

My first job was at a Dairy Queen (1996 to 2003). Not too long
ago I was thinking back about the people I worked with there,
and particularly the people I really enjoyed working with. I
had found one of them on Facebook and messaged him, but he
    didn't remember me. :(

I ordered a deal from Burger King this morning via DoorDash...buy
one double sausage egg and cheese croissant, and get one free. I added
an order of tater tots, and a large Dr Pepper.

I have enough food and drink now to last until March. As long as I
can keep power, I'll be in good shape, and won't have to order out
    or eat out until spring.

Pineapple, canadian bacon and jalapeno. I'd do it.

Mix it up and replace the canadian bacon with spam or anchovies some time. I probably said this before.

Spam? on Pizza? My wife likes spam, I think it's about the worst meat
    I've ever tried.

    Spam:

    Nutritional Downsides:

High Sodium: A single serving can contain a significant portion (around 33%) of your daily recommended sodium, contributing to hypertension.

High Fat & Saturated Fat: It's rich in fat and saturated fat, which are linked to chronic diseases.
Sodium Nitrite: A preservative linked to cancer risk, especially colorectal cancer.
Ultra-Processed: Classified as ultra-processed, which is associated with various health problems.

    Nick,

Yeah, I'm by no means a competitive eater, either. I tend to like Chicago dogs, which usually have mustard, onions, pickle, tomato,
and some mildly spicy peppers on it.

Never thought of tomato on a hot dog...but I do enjoy them.

Also, I only really like sauerkraut if it's with a bratwurst,
Polish dog, or similar. I don't really like sauerkraut on an
    American-style hot dog.

I tried sauerkraut way back in elementary school nearly 60 years ago...and I didn't care for it. I guess one has to acquire a taste for it.

I think sauerkraut is only really good with certain things. A bratwurst or Polish dog is probably the only thing I like sauerkraut with.

I think sauerkraut is only really good with certain things. A bratwurst or Polish dog is probably the only thing I like sauerkraut with.

I produce a whole lot of cabbage at home, therefore I produce a lot of sauerkraut as a cheap way of preserving it. I remember watching a video review for a fermentation tank and the guy running the review said "I don't know who would need a tank as big as this one". I have 6 which are about the same size as that one.

Sauerkraut is "really good" with most basic meats. You roast a chicken in the fireplace, sauerkraut will work fine with it. You roast ribs, same thing. It is a classic with sausages or burgers.

Sauerkraut is "fine" with a lot of stuff. There are lots of combinations I would not be doing but I end up doing because I have so much of it. I have lots of eggs, pumpkins and cabagge, therefore if I need to clear the storage shed to make room for the next batches I end up eating grilled zuccini with sauerkraut and a fried egg on top. No high class cooking and not an A class combination but it works.

Poppy Seed Bun: A steamed poppy seed bun holds everything together.

Bright Green Relish: A sweet, neon-green pickle relish.

Chopped White Onions: Fresh, diced white onions.

Dill Pickle Spear: A whole dill pickle spear tucked alongside the dog.

Tomato Wedges: Slices or wedges of fresh tomato.

Sport Peppers: A few pickled sport peppers for a bit of heat.

You don't hear "over-medium" very often, but that's the way I like my eggs, too. Not so much a thin runny yolk, but just a bit thicker and
not yet solid is perfect, IMO.

Just cooked enough so you can catch it before it runs onto your shirt.

There's an art to nailing a dish with 3 or 4 perfect ingredients.

On the plate: White rice, scrambled eggs (on the rice), black pepper
on both, broiled Spam slices beside the rice. Four ingredients.
    Superb.

(Bonus) - makes an equally good Breakfast, or Dinner.

I'd add some hot sauce - either Tapatio or Pepper Plant hot sauce.

I should try that. I've been trying to cut down on bread in lunches and
been frying a half a cabbage, shredded, in a tablespoon or two of olive

You can add pork cut into cubes or something and it's awesome with the cabbage. Maybe you could call it a cabbage casserole? I dunno.

Would you be willing to sacrifice the black pepper for the hot sauce?

I don't generally use that kind of pepper, but you're right, that would
fit well with the high-brow nature of this dish. I'm usually not a big
    fan of hot sauce anyway.

I've never really liked sourdough bread that much.. But I think that would sound good with a slice of French bread/baguette.

I think either would be good as garlic bread. Yum!

There really is an art to simple dishes, I always screw around in the kitchen and its easy to muddy up the flavor profile of things by dumping them full of spices and not letting the individule ingredients make kinda layers of flavour, somethings i do like alot of spices like when smoking a turkey it kinda lets it infuse

During Lent, places that normally don't sell fish (Arby's, Wendy's,
etc.) have it on their menu, so they can pick up the Catholic
    clientele.

Lore has that this is why one McD's franchisee created the Filet-O-Fish
in the 50s and then the entire chain adopted it.

I believe Burger King has one year round. Arby's and Wendy's only have them during Lent.

A couple years ago, I noticed Popeye's has a fish sandwich
    during Lent too.

They have to pick up the Catholic clientele.

I think sauerkraut is only really good with certain things. A
bratwurst or Polish dog is probably the only thing I like
    sauerkraut with.

There's a family in the Xenia, Ohio area...all licensed ham radio operators...mother, father, and daughter, and they all LOVE sauerkraut.
They even attend a yearly sauerkraut festival up there.
